Framed Wall Parallel-Path Effective R-Value, U-Factor & Thermal Bridging Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Calculate ASHRAE parallel-path whole-wall R-Value vs. nominal cavity batt R-Value.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Cavity Insulation R Value: Nominal cavity batt/spray insulation R-value (e.g., R-13, R-15, R-19, R-21).
- Wood Stud R Value: Wood stud R-value (~1.25 per inch: 4.38 for 2×4, 6.88 for 2×6).
- Framing Factor Percent: Wall framing fraction (23% standard 16" OC, 15% advanced 24" OC framing).
- Continuous Sheathing R Value: Continuous exterior rigid foam + drywall/siding R-value across both paths.
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Effective Whole-Wall R-Value is 19.44 ft²·°F·h/BTU. The calculation follows Assembly R-Value & Thermal Bridge Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Cavity Insulation R Value from 19 R-value to 21 R-value changes Effective Whole-Wall R-Value from 19.44 ft²·°F·h/BTU to 20.42 ft²·°F·h/BTU. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Uses standard NREL, IEEE, ASHRAE, and IRC design equations.
- Verify final structural, electrical, and mechanical specifications against local building codes.
Scope: Global Engineering & Building Code Standard Check the assumptions and limitations against your situation before relying on the estimate.
