Psychometric Standard Error of Measurement (SEM = SD·√(1−r)) Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Compute true-score confidence bands from test SD and reliability r_xx.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Observed Score: Student’s observed scaled test score.
- Test Standard Deviation: Population standard deviation of the test (e.g., 15 for IQ/standard scores).
- Test Reliability Coeff: Test reliability coefficient r_xx (0.00 to 0.99).
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) is 4.5 pts. The calculation follows Psychometric SEM Band Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Test Standard Deviation from 15 SD to 17 SD changes Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) from 4.5 pts to 5.1 pts. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Uses official published scoring scales, Carnegie unit conventions, and ISO calendar rules.
- Official standardized test equating curves vary slightly by test form administration date.
