Multiple-Choice Guessing Penalty Expected Value & Elimination Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Determine when eliminating 1 or 2 wrong choices makes guessing +EV.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Total Options Per Question: Total choices per MCQ (e.g., 4 for A–D, 5 for A–E).
- Eliminated Wrong Options: Number of choices you can confidently rule out as wrong.
- Points For Correct: Marks awarded for a correct answer.
- Penalty For Wrong: Marks deducted for an incorrect answer (positive number).
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Expected Value (EV) per Guess is 0.67 pts/guess. The calculation follows MCQ Guessing EV Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Total Options Per Question from 4 choices to 5 choices changes Expected Value (EV) per Guess from 0.67 pts/guess to 0.25 pts/guess. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Uses official published scoring scales, Carnegie unit conventions, and ISO calendar rules.
- Official standardized test equating curves vary slightly by test form administration date.
