Little’s Law System Concurrency (L = λW), Throughput & Latency Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Apply Little’s Law L = RPS × (Latency_ms / 1000) to size server concurrency.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Arrival Rate Rps: Average request arrival throughput (λ) in requests per second.
- Mean Response Latency Ms: Average end-to-end request processing time (W) in milliseconds.
- Peak Traffic Multiplier: Peak burst traffic multiplier for worker pool headroom.
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Mean In-Flight Concurrency (L = λW) is 102 requests. The calculation follows Little’s Law (L = λW) Systems Engineering Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Arrival Rate Rps from 1,200 req/s to 1,320 req/s changes Mean In-Flight Concurrency (L = λW) from 102 requests to 112.2 requests. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Uses industry-standard IEEE, IETF RFC, and GPU/cloud hardware sizing conventions.
- Capacity planning estimate; benchmark under production traffic patterns before finalizing cluster or hardware procurement.
Scope: IEEE / IETF / Cloud Systems Engineering Standard Check the assumptions and limitations against your situation before relying on the estimate.
