Worked Example: Architecture Sizing Example: Fiber Optic Link Budget
Verify single-mode (1310/1550 nm) or multi-mode fiber link budgets in dB.
- Enter the workload parameters, model dimensions, or network link specifications.
- Compute the sizing equation: TotalLoss_dB = Length_km × Attenuation_dB/km + Connectors × 0.5 + Splices × 0.1; Margin_dB = (Tx_dBm − TotalLoss) − RxSensitivity_dBm.
- Inspect the primary capacity metric, headroom buffers, and 3 SVG visualizations.
Result: Calculates Fiber Optic Link Budget via TotalLoss_dB = Length_km × Attenuation_dB/km + Connectors × 0.5 + Splices × 0.1; Margin_dB = (Tx_dBm − TotalLoss) − RxSensitivity_dBm.

Fiber Optic Link Loss Budget, Attenuation & Optical Power Margin Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Verify single-mode (1310/1550 nm) or multi-mode fiber link budgets in dB.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Fiber Length Km: Total optical fiber cable route length in kilometers.
- Fiber Attenuation Db Km: Fiber attenuation in dB/km (0.35 at 1310nm, 0.22 at 1550nm).
- Connector Pairs Count: Number of mated LC/SC patch panel connector pairs (0.5 dB each).
- Fusion Splices Count: Number of fusion splices along route (0.1 dB each).
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Optical Link Power Margin is 5.2 dB. The calculation follows Fiber Optic Link Budget Systems Engineering Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Fiber Length Km from 12 km to 13 km changes Optical Link Power Margin from 5.2 dB to 4.85 dB. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Uses industry-standard IEEE, IETF RFC, and GPU/cloud hardware sizing conventions.
- Capacity planning estimate; benchmark under production traffic patterns before finalizing cluster or hardware procurement.
Scope: IEEE / IETF / Cloud Systems Engineering Standard Check the assumptions and limitations against your situation before relying on the estimate.
