APGAR Newborn Vitality Score (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Compute the 5-sign neonatal APGAR score (0–10) at 1 and 5 minutes after birth.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Appearance Skin Color0to2: Appearance / skin color (0 = blue/pale all over, 1 = acrocyanosis, 2 = pink all over).
- Pulse Heart Rate0to2: Pulse / heart rate (0 = absent, 1 = <100 bpm, 2 = ≥100 bpm).
- Grimace Reflex0to2: Grimace / reflex irritability (0 = none, 1 = grimace, 2 = cry/cough/sneeze).
- Activity Muscle Tone0to2: Activity / muscle tone (0 = limp, 1 = some flexion, 2 = active motion).
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Total Newborn APGAR Score is 9 points (0–10). The calculation follows Newborn APGAR Score Formula; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Appearance Skin Color0to2 from 2 pts (0–2) to 1 pts (0–2) changes Total Newborn APGAR Score from 9 points (0–10) to 8 points (0–10). This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
