Formula & Mathematical Methodology: Compound Growth with Periodic Contributions & Effective Rate Conversion

reff = (1 + rm)m − 1,   rmo = (1 + reff)112 − 1
FV = P(1 + rmo)12t + PMT · [(1 + rmo)12t − 1rmo]
r_eff_annual = (1 + r / m)^m − 1; r_mo = (1 + r_eff_annual)^(1/12) − 1; FV = P(1+r_mo)^(12t) + PMT × [((1+r_mo)^(12t) − 1) / r_mo]
  • P: Initial lump-sum investment
  • PMT: Monthly recurring deposit
  • r: Nominal annual interest rate (decimal)
  • m: Compounding periods per year (1, 4, 12, or 365)
  • t: Investment horizon in years

Rounding: Compounding uses exact effective monthly conversion from the chosen nominal compounding frequency; currency values round to nearest cent/dollar.

Worked Example: $10,000 Initial + $500/Month at 8% Compounded Monthly for 20 Years

An investor starts with $10,000 and contributes $500 at the end of every month for 20 years (240 months) at an 8% nominal rate compounded monthly.

  1. Initial $10,000 compounds over 240 months to $10,000 × (1.006667)^240 = $49,268.03.
  2. 240 monthly contributions of $500 ($120,000 total) compound to $294,510.21.
  3. Combined nominal ending balance = $49,268.03 + $294,510.21 = $343,778.24 ($130,000 contributed + $213,778.24 interest).
Result: Ending nominal balance is $343,778.24, or $209,798.58 in today’s dollars after 2.5% annual inflation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does beginning-of-month vs. end-of-month contribution timing change the result?

Depositing at the beginning of each month (an annuity due) gives every monthly contribution one extra month of compounding compared to end-of-month deposits.

What is the difference between nominal balance and inflation-adjusted value?

The nominal balance is the actual dollar figure on your future statement. The inflation-adjusted value divides that future balance by (1 + inflation)^years to show what that money can buy in today’s prices.

Compound Interest Calculator: inputs, method, and how to read the result

Project nominal and inflation-adjusted investment growth with customizable compounding frequency and deposit timing.

Choose inputs for the case you are checking

The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.

  • Display Currency: Amounts are treated in the selected currency; no foreign-exchange conversion is applied.
  • Initial Investment Principal: Starting lump-sum deposit at Day 0.
  • Monthly Contribution: Recurring amount added every month.
  • Nominal Annual Return Rate: Expected annual rate before inflation.

What the calculation includes

With the default values shown, Projected Future Balance (Nominal) is USD 343,778.24. The calculation follows Compound Growth with Periodic Contributions & Effective Rate Conversion; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.

One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Initial Investment Principal from 10,000 USD ($) to 11,000 USD ($) changes Projected Future Balance (Nominal) from USD 343,778.24 to USD 348,705.04. This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.

Where to use caution

  • Converts the selected compounding frequency (daily, quarterly, annual) into an exact equivalent monthly rate so monthly contributions compound consistently.
  • Does not deduct annual capital gains or dividend taxes during the accumulation phase.

Scope: Global Check the assumptions and limitations against your situation before relying on the estimate.
