Worked Example: 1920 × 1080 Resolution Resized to 1280px Width & 256 GB SSD Conversion
Reduce 1920×1080 to its simplest ratio, scale to 1280px width, and convert a 256 GB SSD to binary GiB.
- gcd(1920, 1080) = 120 → 1920/120 : 1080/120 = 16:9.
- Target height = 1280 × (1080 ÷ 1920) = 720 px (2.07 MP original).
- 256 × 10⁹ bytes ÷ 2³⁰ = 238.42 GiB.
Result: 16:9 aspect ratio, 1280×720 scaled size, and 256 GB = 238.42 GiB.

Aspect Ratio, Image Dimensions & Storage Converter: inputs, method, and how to read the result
Compute GCD aspect ratios, responsive image dimensions, megapixels, and decimal (GB) vs. binary (GiB) storage capacities.
Choose inputs for the case you are checking
The defaults are illustrative. Replace them with values for your case and keep the units shown beside each field.
- Original Width (Pixels): Source image, video, or viewport width in pixels.
- Original Height (Pixels): Source image, video, or viewport height in pixels.
- Target Width for Proportional Resize: Enter desired width to compute exact proportional height.
- Decimal Storage Capacity (GB): Advertised drive/cloud size in decimal Gigabytes (GB) to convert to binary GiB.
What the calculation includes
With the default values shown, Simplified Aspect Ratio & Responsive Size is 16:9 (1.778:1). The calculation follows Euclidean GCD Aspect Reduction & IEC Binary Storage Conversion; the formula and variable definitions above show how the inputs combine.
One-input check: With the other defaults held constant, changing Original Width (Pixels) from 1,920 px to 2,112 px changes Simplified Aspect Ratio & Responsive Size from 16:9 (1.778:1) to 88:45 (1.956:1). This is a comparison inside the calculator's stated model, not a prediction.
Where to use caution
- Raw uncompressed image buffer size assumes 24-bit RGB (3 bytes per pixel).
- Compressed JPEG, WebP, or AVIF file sizes depend on image entropy and quantization quality settings.
Scope: Global (IEC 80000-13 & SI Standards) Check the assumptions and limitations against your situation before relying on the estimate.
